Get ready for life-size foosball, right in the heart of Mankato’s revitalized City Center.
Greater Mankato Area United Way is accepting teams for its Human Foosball Tournament, to take place noon to 5 p.m. July 18 on the 500 block of South Front Street, with an awards ceremony to follow. Registration begins at 11 a.m.
Thirty-two teams will compete in the double-elimination tournament on donated courts designed and built by John Fritz Construction. The event will feature food and other activities, along with music by Radio Mankato. Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities are available.
In a human foosball game, players hold on to sliding PVC pipes and must stay in position as they try to score. Six players from each side compete at a time, and teams of more than six may substitute throughout the games. The team that scores the most goals in 10 minutes wins.
The registration fee for a team is $600. Minimum of six players per team; players must be 18 years of age or older. Corporate team sponsors are encouraged. Teams can register by calling United Way at (507) 345-4551 or emailing Tricia at email@example.com.
Funds raised will benefit the 52 nonprofit programs of Greater Mankato Area United Way, which serves cities within 30 miles of Mankato.
According to Barb Kaus, Greater Mankato Area United Way president, the foosball tournament has become a dynamic community effort. “We want to raise awareness of United Way’s important work in our region and create a fun atmosphere at the same time,” Kaus said. She added that the tournament’s bustling City Center location will bring a special community element to the event.
The Human Foosball Tournament is part of United Way’s reinvention as the nonprofit organization looks for new ways to connect with businesses and community members.
